Information about Pawlu Grech Paintings
PAWLU GRECH, Maltese artist and musician was born in Valletta on the 20th February 1938. The first important event in his artistic development occurred when aged fifteen he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome, from which musical institution he obtained his piano diploma seven years later. His special merits as a student were crowned by his meeting with Igor Stravinsky who commented positively on one of Grech’s scores. Yet, despite being immersed in music, Grech also found the time to attend art lessons at the Scuola Galli, now closed.
The second stage of Grech’s artistic formation started in 1964 when he won a scholarship to study orchestral conducting and composition in London. Here his proven skills as a conductor earned him the ‘Ricordi’ prize for conducting and an invitation by the BBC to conduct the English Chamber Orchestra. Between 1968 and 1971, Grech studied composition with the Austrian musicologist Hans Keller, who was to become Grech’s musical mentor. Grech’s works were broadcast in Britain, Italy, Germany and other countries during the late 70s and throughout the following decade. During his stay in London, Grech continued his practical research in the visual medium, a process that blossomed in the first solo exhibition of his works at the Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey in 1985.
In the late 80s, Grech’s attention increasingly turned to painting. For three times, some of his works were shown at an international exhibition in Paris entitled ‘In Praise of Small Format in Contemporary Art’. Recently, he was also invited to take part in the art Biennale in Florence. A tribute to his outstanding career in the arts came in 2000 when he was bestowed with the title of ‘Chevalier Academique’ by the Accademia Internazionale Greci-Marino Accademia del Verbano di lettere, arti, scienze of Vinzaglio in Italy.
Deterred by the decadence of many contemporary trends in art and music, Grech decided to move back to Malta in 1986. Here he has been active as an artist and as a teacher of music and art. The main teaching that Grech tries to impart to his students is that they engage in a process of conscious and critical reflection on their art so as to avoid the superficiality and egocentrism that characterizes much of what is being proposed as art both locally and abroad.
