Made in Malta - Malta Windmill - Stone

A Maltese craft hand-made from stone. This is a miniature Maltese Windmill which has been carved from limestone. Before the Knights of St. John arrived in Malta in 1530, grinding of wheat was done manually or with the help of animals. The knights ordered the building of the windmills, in areas where there was a certain number of population and were built on high ridges. Nowadays, there are a few remaining windmills which are mainly tourist attractions.
The windmill consists of a central tower around which a number of rooms form the rectangular base of the windmill itself. These rooms served as the storage area and the living quarters of the family operating the windmill. The wheat grinding apparatus lies in the upper part of the circular tower.
