Made in Malta - Memories from Malta - Maltese Folk Music & Songs

The traditional Maltese folk music and songs date back for centuries and it was commonly known as street music due to its humble origins. The instrumetal music is called daqqaqa while the għana [pronounced as aana] consists of background folk guitar while one or more persons in a melodic voice create a friendly yet challenging atmosphere with improvised lyrics. A very interesting fact is that the improvised tune is normally sung with quarter tones while the accompaniment is in tonality.
