Maltese Music Information
Band music is one of the most popular traditions on the Islands. Every town and village has at least one, usually two, band clubs. Band music is taken seriously, and is the mainstay of many open-air events. The highlight of the year for band music is the parish festa. Check out the Festa Merchandise Category.
While Maltese music today is largely western, traditional Maltese music includes what is known as "għana" (pronounced as aana). This consists of background folk guitar music, while two or three persons take it in turns to argue a point in a melodic voice. The lyrics tell stories of village life, with its wonderful personalities, and of events in local history. Today, you might chance across an impromptu Għana in a rural bar. It takes a number of years of practice to be able to combine the 
required artistic qualities with the ability to debate effectively.
Every year Malta participates in the Song for Europe - Eurovision Song Contest with a song which is carefully chosen some months before during the Malta Song for Europe. The top songs are available on CD.
