A luzzu (pronounced loot-su in Maltese) is a traditional type of fishing boat from the Maltese Islands. Traditionally, they are brightly painted in shades of yellow, red, green and blue, and the bow is normally pointed with a pair of eyes. These eyes may be the modern survival of an ancient Phoenician custom (also practiced by the ancient Greeks); they are sometimes (and probably inaccurately) referred to as the Eye of Horus or of Osiris.
These brightly-painted boats are as much a national image of the Islands as the Maltese Cross. They are descendents of the boats used by the Phoenicians. The Luzzu is the traditional fishing boat, while the Dhajsa is really only seen in Grand Harbour.
Dhajsa are more akin to Venetian gondolas, and were used to ferry passengers and goods to and from ships berthed in Grand Harbour. Today, Dhajsa owners offer trips round the Harbour. They are the boats used in the annual regatta on 7th September. Look out for them near the Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa.
But on their prows, you'll see the Eye of Osiris, the Phoenicians' god of protection against evil: an example of ancient myth in modern times.
