Information about White Maltese Wine
Since ancient times, grapevine was grown to produce wine in several Mediterranean countries including Malta. Historically, the Mediterranean was the focus of viticulture (the art of grape growing) with the most famous wines of the world being produced under these ideal climatic conditions. Ever since, the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Knights of Malta and the Maltese people have continued to grow vines and produce wine for well over 4000 years.
Some 4000 years later Malta is witnessing a revival of this ancient art as viticulture positions itself to become one of the island's leading agricultural activities. There are several wine making companies in Malta and two of the major companies were founded in 1907 and 1919 respectively showing that Malta has always been involved in wine-making craft. The high standards of the Maltese wine are partly attributed to Malta's favourable climatic conditions but also to the controls by experts to ensure that the optimum level of quality is achieved.
Malta may not be renowned like its neighbours for wine production, but the Maltese vintages still manage to win several accolades in France, Italy and further afield.
International grape varieties grown here include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Carignan, Chenin Blanc and Moscato. Then there are the indigenous varieties, Gellewza and Ghirghentina, which are producing some excellent wines of distinct body and flavour.
Browse through the fine selection of wine. All bottles are numbered to validate the issue of a vintage which usually yields about 10,000 bottles making most of these bottles collector's items.
