Information about Telephone Cards
The very first telecards (Telephone cards) which were issued in Malta date back to 1991. These
cards consisted of 2 telecards with the value of LM2.50 and Lm5.00 respectively. From then on, telecards were issued every year in larger quantities and with different denominations, and in 1992 Telemalta (the predecessor of Maltacom) introduced the first pictorial card. In 1997, there was an increase in the number of cards issued compared to the previous years.
These telephone cards of Lm2.00, Lm3.00 or Lm5.00 are issued on a regular basis and usually contain a picture which describes a local or international event.
Besides normal telephone cards, Malta also offers Easy Line cards (which is a type of calling system for the Maltese) and mobile phone cards. The latter are still are not a popular collectors' item when compared to the normal telecards however they are still requested cards.
