Information about History
Malta has been inhabited since around 5200 BC. A significant prehistoric culture, that predates the Egypt's Pyramids by a millennium, is believed to have existed on the islands. During this period, Malta was colonised by all the major forces of Mediterranean namely, the Phoenicians, the Greeks who called the colony "Melita", Carthaginians, Roman Empire, then the Arabs which contributed to the Maltese language, the Knights of Malta who built Valletta, the French under Napoleon and then part of the British Empire. Malta became Independent, later became a Republic and eventually in 1979 there was Freedom. In 2004 Malta joined the European Union.
